Canon!
Since there are variations on what can happen to Varric in game, I've picked my options for Varric as I'm playing him:
1. Bartrand is dead. Varric killed him at the end of Family Matter. Varric tends to regret this, then remember this brother brutally shafted him and stop regretting, then remember his brother was pretty damned insane and start again, then remember the brutal shafting and stop... and so on. He is rather of two minds about the whole thing. In fact, there are a lot of feelings going on in general, which irritates him to no end - Varric prefers to be the simple-minded observer/storyteller of other people's feelings, thank you.
2. Bethany is dead. It was Carver whom Varric got totroll know in game.
3. Varric is taken POST Cassandra interrogation, so he has just told the story to Cassandra. It is, for him, 9:40 Dragon, three years after the events of the end of Dragon Age 2.
4. Friends with Hawke. Hawke's his bro, man. ... only she's female. BUT WHATEVER, a true bromance knows no gender.
5. Anders survived endgame - Hawke allowed him to rejoin the team to help fight the Templars. Varric had no opinion on this decision in particular - or not one that he would bother to express.
